Vienna is the kind of city that feels elegant without trying too hard — rich in history, effortlessly beautiful, and best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. This 4-day Vienna itinerary blends classic sights, café culture, art, markets, and plenty of time to wander, making it ideal for a first visit

Day 1: Arrival + First Taste of Vienna

After landing in Vienna around midday, head straight into the city and drop your luggage at your hotel before starting your first afternoon of exploring. Once settled, grab a quick lunch at Figlmüller Bäckerstraße, one of Vienna’s most famous spots known for its legendary Wiener Schnitzel (with vegetarian options available).

Bonus: it’s right near St. Stephen’s Cathedral, making it the perfect first stop.

Spend the rest of the afternoon wandering at your own pace. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a Vienna icon with free basic entry, then continue on to the stunning Austrian National Library, an ornate space that feels straight out of a fairytale. As the day winds down, enjoy a relaxed dinner nearby and soak in your first Vienna sunset — a calm, memorable introduction to the city.

Travel Tip: you'll want to make a reservation at Figlmüller Bäckerstraße or face a long line waiting at the door.

Day 2: Cafés, Easter Markets, Vintage Finds & Art

Start the morning with at Café Central, one of Vienna’s most iconic coffeehouses. Order a coffee, sample their famous cakes, and take in the historic atmosphere before heading out for the day.

Travel Tip: Cafe Central is another spot you'll want to make a reservation for as a line can form down the street just to try their famous sachertorte cake.

Nearby, stop by Palais Daun-Kinsky, then continue on to explore Vienna’s charming Easter markets at Freyung and Am Hof. These seasonal markets are perfect for browsing handmade goods, spring decor, and local treats.

In the afternoon, stroll through Volksgarten before diving into Vienna’s vintage shopping scene. Spend some time browsing local favorites like Burggasse 24, HUMANA Vintage, Retroschatz, and Bootik 54.

Later, wander through Naschmarkt, Vienna’s most famous market — whether you’re hungry or just there to explore, it’s a lively spot worth seeing. Wrap up the afternoon with a visit to the Upper Belvedere Palace, home to stunning gardens and the world-famous painting The Kiss. Afterward, head back to your hotel to relax before dinner.

In the evening, enjoy a classic Viennese meal at Plachutta, well known for its traditional cuisine and timeless atmosphere.

Travel Tip: Plachutta is a highly recommended traditional Viennese restaurant - a bit more upscale - but should also make a reservation to avoid a wait. This was one of our favorite meals of the trip!

Day 3: Palaces, Gardens & a Cozy Dinner

Begin the day with coffee and pastries at a local café before heading to Schönbrunn Palace. Start by browsing the Easter Market outside the palace, then head inside for a guided palace tour that includes access to several garden attractions. Spend time wandering the beautifully maintained grounds — they’re just as impressive as the palace itself.

Travel Tip: Grab "skip the line" tickets ahead of time to secure all the attractions you want to see at the Schönbrunn Palace.

After returning to your hotel for a break and some free time, get ready for dinner at Chez Bernard Restaurant et Bar. This cozy spot is perfect for a relaxed evening and a slightly more intimate dining experience to end the day.

Travel Tip: looking for a good sunset spot in Vienna? The Chez Bernard restaurant is actually part of a hotel - walk up one floor to the rooftop bar for stunning views of the city.

Day 4: Coffee, Architecture & Departure

On your final morning, grab breakfast at Joseph Brot Wien Bio Bäckerei, a beloved local bakery known for high-quality bread and pastries. Then head out to see the colorful and unique Hundertwasser House, one of Vienna’s most distinctive architectural landmarks.

Finish your trip with a peaceful walk through Prater Park, a green escape that offers a calm contrast to the city’s grand architecture. After returning to your hotel to check out, make your way to the airport — leaving Vienna with full memories, happy feet, and probably a new appreciation for slow mornings and café culture.

Travel Tip: Vienna is best enjoyed without rushing. Build in time to wander, sit at cafés longer than planned, and let the city’s rhythm guide your days.
